How to Make A Tag Baby Blanket (Simple Sewing)

Share It:

My neighbor is having a baby soon (like any day now soon) and I wanted to sew her a little present.   A few ribbons, some flannel, a free afternoon,  and I had a cute, soft tag baby blanket for her!  It would make a cute baby shower gift too.

When I had Molly a friend of mine in another state sent her a handmade flannel tag blanket and it was one of my favorite gifts. Both girls loved to snuggle with it and Ellie especially loved to play with the little ribbon tags. Even now that blanket is keeping a baby doll warm in Molly's room.  It is the perfect gift for a new baby!

Supplies:

Flannel in 2 different, coordinating prints- You'll need a 19 inch square of each to make an 18 inch finished blanket (Wash your flannels in  Dreft or some other baby friendly detergent before you start.)

Ribbon in matching colors--I like a variety of widths, some satin, some grosgrain for different textures

Basic sewing supplies--sewing machine, thread, scissors, pins, measure tape

1. Cut out your two squares from each print of flannel. My pieces are 19 inches square.

I don't know why they look like rectangles. They aren't. They are squares.

2. Cut 4 inch pieces of ribbon from your various colors/textures. I just cut out a bunch of each.

3. Fold each ribbon in half and pin it to the RIGHT side of one of your pieces of fabric.  These are the tags.  You can space them as far apart as you like. I spaced mine 2 inches apart.

4. Now it's time to sew on the tags!

5. Sew, sew, sew. Run a line of stitches close to the edge of your fabric.

6. When all your tags have been sewn, put your two pieces of flannel right sides together and sew, leaving a 1/2 inch seam allowance.  Leave an un-sewn space, as if you are sewing a pillow.

7.  Turn the blanket right side out. Sew up the open space. Top stitch for a clean, finished edge.

And done!  SO easy!  This is a good project to work on when you feel like sewing but don't feel like tackling anything challenging.

Cheers!

  8. This is so sweet and cozy. Babies love holding those tags. My three year old still needs to hold the tag on his doggie to go to sleep at night. Thanks for sharing it at Silver Pennies Sundays!
