Refinished Country Table and Homemade Chalk Paint (Furniture Redo)

My sister found a crummy old table out on the curb for garbage and she thought of me! um?? I guess that's a good thing? HA! Of course it is! She knows I like to DIY furniture redos and she knows I'm struggling to put my dining room together so I was tickled to get it!  Plus I knew it would be the perfect project to try out a homemade chalk paint recipe! I'm using it as a sideboard right now.

Here is what it looked like when my sister dragged it to my house.  It has two leaves that lift up and leaves inside that extend it even further. I like that since I can use this as extra seating during dinner parties and holidays.

I used a stripper first to remove the shine and then I sanded the top with 60, 80,100, 150 grits sandpaper and my orbital sander.  I lightly sanded the legs.  Then I lightly sprayed the legs with white spray paint.

I mixed up some homemade chalk paint using my own measurements. I had about a half a gallon of a pale gray latex paint and added some water and a couple of spoonfuls of plaster of paris. I stirred until it was thoroughly blended and then applied two coats on the legs. I highlighted the details with a little black acrylic craft paint.

When it was dry I lightly distressed it and then used Minwax Finishing Paste in natural over the whole thing.  I buffed it to be as shiny as I could get it to be.  The homemade chalk paint is cool because it dries with virtually no brush  marks. It's just smooth and even. Cool.

I then stained the top using Minwax Dark Walnut (2 coats) and topped it with 5 layers of polyurethane.

It is great to have another plate to set plates and platters and such.

I like the top a lot! I just adore all the variations in wood when it's freshly sanded and stained. It's so pretty!

Have you completed any furniture projects lately?

Cheers!
Jenny

    1. Thank you so much! And I like the runner on that table too! It's too short for my regular table but it fits this one just fine!
