Painting a Fireplace Surround, Hanging Fireplace Updates

Share It:

We were busy today updating our fireplace!  Years and years ago I had purchased a pair of oil rubbed bronze candle sconces from Pottery Barn.  They hung in our living room and they were cool enough!  I wasn't sure if I would use them in this house since I'm lightening things up a bit but then I decided I wanted them above our fireplace. So that's where we put them!

We didn't use anchors because we were putting them on wood paneling. All we needed to do was use a couple of screws and they were up.

Jim then left to take Molly to see Brave with our neighbors. When the cat's away....

I got out some Rustoleum High Heat paint and de-brassed our fireplace surround! Yippee!  But I can't get those scorch marks off the top no matter how hard I scrub. Any suggestions on how to get scorch marks off brick?

I want to paint this brick so badly!  Jim is on the fence about it so until he is on board 100% it will stay like this. Ugly. But at least it's less brassy!

Which way do you like it better?  We aren't sure if we like the black any more than we liked the brass, actually.

Enjoy your Monday!

Cheers!
Jenny

  1. I think you did a great job :) personally I prefer the black, but think it needs to be against a nice matt pastel over the brick. Against the red brick it looks a little 'angry' - but 100% nicer than bassy!

  2. I totally like the black over the brass. Painting brick...well, I love the brick around our fireplace (you can see some pics here http://frugalaintcheap.blogspot.com/2012/06/coffee-table-without-coffee.html) but it does have a different feel/look. I think painting bricks can really change the look in a good way. I would do it the same color of the wall, to make it "blend in". I have seen pictures of painted brick and it does look good!

  4. I like it black! I'm imagining the brick painted white and I think it would look fabulous! I painted the red brick in my classroom one year and loved it! :)

  5. I'm close to painting my own brass fireplace surround. Thanks for posting this. When you talked about painting your brick/husband on the fence, it reminded me of another post I had read on The Yellow Cape Cod where they whitewashed the brick. It turned out really nice. Maybe it would be a good way to meet in the middle! Good luck:)

  6. Hi Jenny!

I'm so doing this as soon as possible. Thanks for showing how to do it.

As for the cleaning of the brick (in case you don't want to paint), do a google search for cleaning soot off brick or stone. I found tons of articles...

  8. Looks great! I'm in agreement about painting the brick... It would be gorgeous! However if you want to keep I the way it is you can use paint to fix the discolored areas, I saw them do it on HGTV and it worked well! Good luck! - Susan

  10. I definitely prefer the black to the brass. I do love painted brick but have a hubby who isn't sure as well. We only have a little bit of red brick on our fireplace and for now, I live with it too. lol I do like the white wash suggestion!
