Strawberry Chocolate Hand Pies (Valentine's Day Dessert)

Here's something to know about me! I am kind of a snow scrooge. I don't love when it snows, I dread it actually. I do not like all the extra clothes you have to stuff your kids in to go play, I do not like watching Jim shovel (and I hate to do it more), and driving in it is particularly annoying.  I'm not into winter sports so I don't even have that. In fact, I was once kicked out of the beginner ski class on the bunny slope because I was so bad. "Um, can you go sit over there?" said the instructor pointing to a tree.  Nope, this girl can never see snow again and be happy.





When it is snowy and cold outside, I tend to bake. I crave the comfort of the warmth of an oven full of something sweet, and the anticipation of that first gooey bite of whatever I stirred together. Secretly I think it's a way to soothe my snowy soul and to bring some me some joy as the white stuff falls. Plus, we fat girls do dig a pastry now and then no matter what the weather.

This season I whipped up some Strawberry Chocolate Hand Pies with some stuff I had laying around. They were tasty little morsels that made the snowy days pass by a bit easier.   




Strawberry Chocolate Hand Pies


Ingredients:

Pie dough, either homemade or store bought. I used Pillsbury.
Strawberry preserves or jam
Chocolate Chips
Powered Sugar
Milk

Directions:

Roll out the pie dough on a floured surface. I wanted thin crusts so I rolled out the Pillsbury crust even thinner.



Using a large cookie cutter, cut out an even amount of dough shapes. Re-roll scraps. Try to end up with an even number.




Lay half of the dough shapes on a large cookie sheet. You could line it with foil since the jam will ooze. It came off easily though. 

Spread about 1 TBS of strawberry preserves on each and top with a few chocolate chips. You can see from the picture I didn't load it up.


Top each with another dough shape and use a fork to seal the edges.



If you are so inclined, you can brush them with milk or an egg wash to make them shiny. I was not so inclined. I did, however, sprinkle granulated sugar on some.


Bake the pies at 350 for about 30 minutes. This will depend on your particular oven and how large  your dough shapes are. Keep an eye and don't let them get over-browned.



Cool pies. Meanwhile, stir together milk and powdered sugar to make a very thin glaze. I had about a half cup of powdered sugar with 3 TBS milk and it was too much.

Dip pies in the glaze and let the glaze dry. 



We enjoyed them! They were a nice treat with a cup of coffee or tea and I will be making them again with different flavors of jam.  But since we are heading toward Valentine's Day I thought the chocolate/strawberry combo would be perfect!   

As for the snow, well I can think about that tomorrow since my hands are full of pie.

    1. They the best the day you make them but they were yummy the next day too. I stored them on the counter and just lightly covered. I didn't want them to get soggy in the fridge. Thanks for asking!
